They connect us with stories, moments, and characters that touch our hearts. And they do more than that…Movies point us to powerful truths about ourselves and even about God. Many churches have done At The Movies series, and we are excited to bring you this specially designed weekend experience. This year we are offering our At The Movies summer series at two locations! We would love for you to join us at Harbor Point Church or at the Regency Theater in downtown San Juan! In addition, we will also be bringing back ENCORE on Thursday evenings following the weekend message. It’s going to be a great series and we hope that you will invite your friends and family to our At The Movies on the weekends or ENCORE on Thursdays!

For more information about AT THE MOVIES, our offered locations, and ENCORE, please see our frequently asked questions below.

Join us every Thursday night from July 25 through August 22 as we take our weekend At The Movies experience to the Regency Theatre in downtown San Juan Capistrano. This is a great opportunity to invite your friends, neighbors and coworkers to enjoy our At The Movies summer series. You can enjoy At The Movies on the weekend and then invite your friends to join you for At The Movies Encore. Or, if you missed a weekend of At The Movies, you can attend Encore at the Regency Theater on the following Thursday!

WHAT IS AT THE MOVIES?

At The Movies is a 5-week long summer message series taking popular movies and connecting them with Biblical truths. In each service you’ll see scenes from some of your favorite films and hear a message that connects to the teaching of the BIble. It’s a great opportunity to invite your friends and family!

WHY ARE YOU SHOWING MOVIES IN SERVICE?

You’ve probably heard the heart behind our church gathering, “In the community, for the community.” The At The Movies series is a great onramp for people who don’t know the message of the Bible to connect with God. Jesus taught through stories and parables, using observable truths to point people to the Father. Movies are modern day parables. Movies explore the issues we all confront; truth, beauty, purpose, pain, connection, and hope. These films are universally popular because they touch on universal longings and truths. It’s a great opportunity to point people to the ultimate source of truth- Jesus.

WHY ARE YOU SHOWING SECULAR FILMS?

Theologian Francis Schaeffer said, “Art is a reflection of God’s creativity, evidence that we are made in the image of God.” While we don’t endorse the entirety of the content in the films we are featuring (in their full length there may be some cursing or violence, etc.), we believe that each of these films points to a truth about the human condition and the need for Jesus. In the same way Jesus taught the people of His day by looking around to the objects and stories present in the culture (coins, sheep, widows, and wayward sons), we are looking to the stories being told in our culture and using the questions they elicit to point people to God.

WILL THERE BE ANY BIBLE TEACHING?

Yes. Each week we’ll look at a movie through a biblical lens, studying Scripture that expands and illuminates the truth at the heart of each movie’s theme.

WHAT IS OUR HOPE FOR PEOPLE?

Our hope for this series is two-fold. First, that the people of Harbor Point would have a practical, tangible way to engage the people in their lives who are spiritually curious or hungry, and invite them to a welcoming place for them to explore their questions. This is an amazing way to “love where you live.” Some highly reputable churches across the country have incorporated At The Movies into their annual series planning and have seen the impact of designing a series to welcome the community. Second, our hope is for the hungry, the hurting, the lost, and the curious; for these films that have connected with them on a heart-level would lead them to the one who is desperately seeking their heart. We are praying for people to come to know Jesus and step into a relationship with Him.

WHERE CAN I EXPERIENCE AT THE MOVIES SUMMER SERIES?

We are excited to announce that our AT THE MOVIES summer series will be offered at two locations: Harbor Point Church and the Regency Theater in downtown San Juan. At Harbor Point Church, AT THE MOVIES will be shown at 5 PM on Saturdays and at 8:30 AM, 10 AM, and 11:30 AM on Sundays. Additionally, we will offer the same At The Movies message at 10 AM on Sunday at the Regency Theater.

WHY ARE YOU OFFERING AT THE MOVIES AT TWO LOCATIONS ON SUNDAYS?

AT THE MOVIES has become such a great opportunity to invite people to join you at Harbor Point and we want to make sure there’s a seat for everyone... During this series, on Sunday mornings at 10am, we are hosting AT THE MOVIES at the Regency Theater in San Juan. This Sunday Morning experience will have live worship at the theater.

WILL YOU HAVE KIDS PROGRAMMING ON SUNDAYS AT BOTH LOCATIONS?

Kids programming will only be available at the Harbor Point Church campus.

WHY AREN’T YOU SHOWING THESE MESSAGES ONLINE?

Due to legal and copyright reasons, At the Movies will not be archived or streamed online. Harbor Point has four live in person services each weekend on the Harbor Point campus and one in person service at the Regency Theater, and we would love for you to join us. For those of you watching from home, we will be streaming a previous message series on anxiety while At the Movies is happening at our campus and at the Regency Theater.

WHAT IS AT THE MOVIES “ENCORE”?

At The Movies Encore will be an encore showing of the weekend “At The Movies” message. ENCORE will be shown at the Regency Theatre in downtown San Juan every Thursday evening during the series. If you miss a weekend of At The Movies you can join us on Thursday evenings, or attend on the weekends and then bring some friends to join you for ENCORE on Thursday!
